Hamilton County residents still hauling branches and brush from the Aug. 11 derecho can drop off yard waste for free Sunday, Aug. 16, at two Rumpke locations, with no appointment needed.
The drop-off runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at:
- Rumpke Sanitary Landfill: 3800 Struble Rd., Cincinnati, OH 45251
- Oakdale Elementary School: 3850 Virginia Ct., Cincinnati, OH 45248
Rumpke opened both sites Saturday and Sunday as part of a partnership with Hamilton County, WLWT reported. There is no charge for Hamilton County residents, which includes those in Montgomery, Blue Ash and Sycamore Township.
Sunday is the final day for the extended drop-off hours.
What to know before you go
Brush and tree branches must be cut to no longer than 4 feet and no larger than 12 inches in diameter. Bundles cannot exceed 50 pounds. Yard trimmings must be in containers or bags; brown paper bags are preferred, and Rumpke will return containers and plastic bags.
No commercial vehicles or commercial-establishment waste will be accepted. Trailers longer than 8 feet and trucks larger than pickups are not allowed at the Oakdale Elementary location; residents with larger loads should use the Rumpke Sanitary Landfill site instead. No pallets, boards, nails, fence, wire, bricks, stones or soil. All children must remain inside vehicles.
Storm damage still widespread
The Aug. 11 derecho knocked out power to more than 260,000 Duke Energy customers across Greater Cincinnati. As of Friday, Aug. 14, about 9,000 customers remained without power, with crews having restored nearly 85 percent of outages.
"Thanks to the dedication of our crews and support teams, we've made substantial progress restoring power across the region, but there is still important work to do," Duke Energy storm director Andy Cassidy said Friday.
Sycamore Township declared a storm damage emergency following the Aug. 11 storms, as the township announced on its official Facebook page. The deadline for curbside debris pickup registration passed Friday, Aug. 14, at 8 a.m.
As we reported Aug. 12, the Storm Prediction Center confirmed the Aug. 11 storm system as a derecho that swept from Iowa through Indiana and into the Cincinnati region.
