Montgomery gardeners can trade their extra perennials for new varieties at a free Fall Plant Swap on Saturday, Sept. 26.

The city's Beautification and Tree Commission is hosting the swap at the Montgomery Farmers' Market, which operates in the Montgomery Elementary School parking lot at 9609 Montgomery Road. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the same hours as the market itself.

Participants should label each plant with whether it prefers sun or shade. The commission also asks that swappers bring a bag or container to carry new plants home.

The commission held the same swap in September 2024, one of several annual programs it runs alongside a Garden Tour and Beautification Day.

Who runs it

The seven-member volunteer commission, chaired by Aaron Kellenberger, advises Montgomery's mayor and City Council on beautification efforts across the city. Craig Margolis serves as the City Council liaison.

Beyond plant swaps, the commission sponsors the Seed Library at Swaim Park, which opened on Arbor Day and marked its one-year anniversary in June. The free library sits behind the Wilder Swaim House, beside the raised pollinator beds, at the corner of Zig Zag and Cooper Roads.
