Montgomery Firefighter Mike Henderson will teach residents how to perform CPR, use a defibrillator and stop severe bleeding at two training courses on Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Montgomery Safety Center.
The city is offering a morning Basic Life Support course for healthcare workers and a longer HeartSaver session open to anyone 10 and older, according to the city's event listing. The HeartSaver course costs $40 for Montgomery residents and people who work in the city. Non-residents pay $80.
Henderson, a Montgomery Fire Department firefighter, has led CPR training sessions at the Safety Center this year, including a class on May 23. In a city bulletin in late April, Council Member Sasha Naiman encouraged residents to "join Firefighter Mike Henderson for CPR training," promoting the recurring program. The city's Facebook page has described his teaching style as easy, fun and interactive.
Two courses, one day
The healthcare-only Basic Life Support course runs from 8 to 10 a.m. and costs $40.
The HeartSaver course begins at 10 a.m. with CPR and AED (automated external defibrillator) training, which wraps up at 1 p.m. Participants can then stay for an optional first aid class from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at no extra charge. That afternoon session covers the American Heart Association First Aid program and the Stop the Bleed course, which teaches bystanders to control life-threatening bleeding.
No prior training is required.
Only those who complete the morning CPR and AED portion may attend the first aid session.
