Summit Park in Blue Ash will host the Teal Power 5K Run and Walk on Saturday, Sept. 19, raising money for ovarian cancer awareness.
The Ovarian Cancer Alliance of Greater Cincinnati is organizing the event, one of the nonprofit's two major annual fundraisers. Participants can choose among four options: a 5K run, a 3K charity walk, a virtual 5K or a virtual 3K, according to the event's registration page. The in-person courses at Summit Park will use chip timing.
Dianne Weidman, co-chair of the Ovarian Cancer Alliance, and Shelly Hastings-Toms appeared on WLWT on Wednesday, Sept. 2, to promote the race. The alliance provides education, support and resources to people affected by ovarian cancer, with a focus on raising awareness of early symptoms.
The group uses the acronym BEAT to help women recognize warning signs: bloating, eating less and feeling full quickly, abdominal or pelvic pain, and trouble with bladder urgency or frequency. According to the alliance's website, ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer deaths among American women. A woman's lifetime risk of developing invasive ovarian cancer is 1 in 71.
The race comes weeks after the Sycamore Township Board of Trustees unanimously proclaimed September 2026 as Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month at their Tuesday, Sept. 1, meeting. The proclamation, signed by Chairman Thomas J. Weidman, Vice Chairman Tracy Kellums and Trustee Tracy Schwegmann, cited American Cancer Society estimates that more than 21,000 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2026 and roughly 12,450 will die from the disease.
Early diagnosis matters. The proclamation noted that catching ovarian cancer early can push the survival rate as high as 92%.
Residents who want to run, walk, volunteer or donate can register online. The Ovarian Cancer Alliance of Greater Cincinnati can also be reached at 513-898-1009.
