Sycamore trustees proclaim October Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Sycamore Township's Board of Trustees proclaimed October Breast Cancer Awareness Month, signing the measure at their Tuesday, Sept. 15 meeting.

The proclamation cites the American Cancer Society as advising women to begin annual mammogram screenings at age 40 and states the board supports breast cancer research and education on detection, risk factors and treatment. Chairman Tom Weidman, Vice Chairman Tracy Kellums and Trustee Tracy Schwegmann signed the document. Fiscal Officer Jonathan T. Deters attested it.

The ACS's current guidelines, revised in July 2026, recommend optional screening for women 40 to 44, with annual mammograms starting at age 45.

The breast cancer measure is the second health awareness proclamation the board approved this fall. Trustees unanimously designated September as Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month at their Sept. 1 meeting.

Residents looking to schedule a mammogram can contact their physician or call the American Cancer Society at 800-227-2345.
