Dozens of Sycamore Township streets will see temporary closures and parking restrictions starting Tuesday, Aug. 4, as crews begin microsurfacing, the second and final phase of the township's $742,755 cape seal road program.
The work covers 84,404 square yards across five scheduled days, touching more than 30 residential streets. Under the program's rules, vehicles parked in violation of posted no-parking signs may be towed to allow construction to proceed.
As we reported July 23, Phase 1 — the chip seal application by Strawser Construction — began in late July. Phase 2 applies a microsurfacing finish coat that seals and protects the pavement, according to the township's announcement. Strawser Construction, a Colas Group company, is performing the work.
The street schedule
The township has not assigned calendar dates to each work day, listing them only as Day 1 through Day 5. Here's the breakdown:
Day 1 (8,015 sq yds): Vyette Place, Rosemary Lane, Yakima Drive, Kalama Court, Grinnell Drive, Taylor Avenue
Day 2 (15,519 sq yds): St. Regis Drive (Winnetka to dead end), Winnetka Drive, Glenellyn Drive, Monroe Avenue (Sycamore to Buxton), Needwood Court, Smallwood Court, Pleasantwood Court, St. Clair Avenue
Day 3 (15,677 sq yds): St. Regis Drive (KenArbre to Winnetka), Widhoff/Williams, York Street, Daffodil Avenue, Crystal Avenue, Beryl Avenue, Buxton Road, Lamont Avenue
Day 4 (24,657 sq yds): Pine Road, Spencer Avenue, Myrtle Avenue, Woodlawn Avenue, Harrison Avenue, Lancaster Avenue
Day 5 (20,536 sq yds): Vorhees Lane, Monroe Avenue (East Galbraith to Sycamore), Beech Avenue, Lake Avenue, Tudor Court, Emerald Avenue, Elizabeth Place
Day 4 is the largest, covering nearly 30% of the total project area.
What residents must do
The township is asking residents on affected streets to:
- Remove vehicles during posted no-parking periods
- Follow all construction signs, barricades and instructions from traffic-control personnel
- Turn off sprinkler and irrigation systems on their scheduled work day
- Keep children and pets away from active work areas
- Reschedule deliveries and lawn services
- Avoid sharp turns, sudden stops or twisting tires on the new surface
- Avoid parking on the new surface for at least 16 hours after the roadway reopens
Some streets will be fully closed to through traffic during work; others will maintain one lane. Emergency vehicles will have access at all times. Residents on closed streets can park on nearby streets that aren't posted with no-parking signs and aren't actively being resurfaced.
The bigger picture
The Board of Trustees — Chairman Thomas J. Weidman, Vice Chairman Tracy Kellums and Trustee Tracy Schwegmann — approved the cape seal contract unanimously on March 3. The township purchased the work through the Ohio Cooperative Purchasing Program, which officials determined would cost less than advertising for separate bids.
