Montgomery's Planning Commission reviewed the final development plan for a $10.5 million renovation and expansion of the city's Safety Center on Monday, Aug. 3, the panel's first session since canceling its July 20 meeting.
The Safety Center at 10150 Montgomery Road houses both the police and fire departments in a building that dates to 1996. The project would add new fire department space and renovate the police side of the facility to accommodate a department that shifted from part-time to full-time staffing.
The final development plan was the commission's only new business item, according to the meeting agenda posted on montgomeryohio.gov. The commission also had approval of minutes from its June 15 session on the agenda.
Whether the commission approved, tabled or continued the application had not been posted to the city's website as of Wednesday, Aug. 5.
What the project includes
The fire department addition calls for new vehicle bays, equipment storage, offices, a training room, locker rooms, living spaces, sleeping quarters and workout facilities. The police department renovation would add covered vehicle parking, a sallyport, an evidence room, holding cells, expanded offices and locker rooms, according to a ConstructConnect project listing.
Site work includes new parking, lighting and landscaping.
Construction is projected to begin in January 2027, with substantial completion by August 2028.
Background
Council Member Lee Ann Bissmeyer previewed the project in an April 2026 column on the city's website: "You'll also soon see construction underway on a new Safety Center, reflecting the successful transition from a part-time to a full-time fire department, and the need for space to support that growth."
Council Member Chris Dobrozsi flagged the renovation as a strategic priority as early as April 2025, writing on the city's website that the goal was to "align the 1996 building with current needs of our police and fire service professionals."
