Blue Ash residents may have a share of $9.2 million sitting unclaimed in state accounts.

The Ohio Department of Commerce's Division of Unclaimed Funds released a ranking of all 1,462 Ohio ZIP codes on Sept. 2. ZIP code 45242 landed at No. 50 statewide with $9.2 million in unclaimed money, WLWT reported. The 45242 ZIP code covers Blue Ash and parts of surrounding communities in Hamilton County.

Statewide, the division is holding $5.4 billion in unclaimed funds. About $644.9 million of that belongs to people in the southwest Ohio region.

Unclaimed funds can include forgotten savings or checking accounts, uncashed insurance payouts, and customer refunds or credits that were never collected.

The division has been on a push to return that money. A statewide media campaign launched in July 2026 featuring Lt. Gov. Jim Tressel encourages Ohioans to search for funds owed to them.

"It only takes a few minutes to check if there is money that belongs to you or your family," Tressel said, according to WLWT.

The campaign appears to be working. The division paid more than 184,000 claims in fiscal year 2026, which ended June 30, according to the Athens Independent. That was a 168% increase over the prior year. The total amount returned jumped 72% to $190 million, up from $149.9 million in fiscal year 2025.

Division Superintendent Akil Hardy said in a Sept. 10 statement reported by WTRF that the agency is investing in technology to make the claims process faster. Claimants no longer need a W-9 tax form or notarized paperwork, and nearly two dozen staff members have been added to handle claims.

For context, the top ZIP code in Ohio is 45840 in Findlay, with $24.8 million unclaimed. Downtown Cincinnati's 45202 ranks third at $22.9 million.

Residents can search for unclaimed funds at unclaimedfunds.ohio.gov by entering their name and a current or previous address. Claims can be submitted by mail or uploaded online. The division's customer support line is 614-466-4433.
