Blue Ash catalog retailer J. Peterman owes vendors more than $1.7 million, according to five Hamilton County court cases filed between August 2019 and January 2026.
The vendor debts come alongside the Ohio Attorney General's consumer-fraud lawsuit against The J. Peterman Company LLC and JP Outfitters Inc., filed Aug. 17 in Hamilton County Court of Common Pleas. The AG's complaint alleges the company failed to deliver goods, ignored customer-service calls and withheld refunds from customers who returned purchases.
Attorney General D. Andrew Wilson's office seeks civil penalties and consumer damages. The company cannot do business in Ohio until it pays all money owed, according to court records reported by the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Senior Assistant Attorney General Tracy Morrison Dickens, who signed the complaint, declined to discuss the case, the Enquirer reported.
Signs of shutdown
The AG's complaint states the office believes the retail business is no longer in operation. The company's websites display a message reading "This store is not currently taking orders."
The site had stopped accepting orders by July 25, according to Internet Archive records cited by the Enquirer. Phone numbers listed for the company's warehouse and corporate office at 5345 Creek Road in Blue Ash were no longer active as of Sept. 4, the Enquirer reported.
Years of losses
Financial trouble had been building. SEC filings show J. Peterman posted net losses of $3.6 million in 2021 and $5.7 million in 2022. Combined revenue for the J. Peterman and Territory Ahead brands totaled $15.8 million for the nine months ending Sept. 30, 2023. That marked a 3.7% decline from the same period in 2022.
A planned Nasdaq IPO under the ticker symbol "JPO" never materialized. Santai Global Asset Management Limited, a Hong Kong-based entity, held a majority voting stake in JP Outfitters as of January 2024, according to the SEC filing.
Retail Dive reported that founder John Peterman was still listed on LinkedIn as chairman. His son Tim Peterman was listed as chairman until May.
In 2018, John Peterman told Retail Dive: "We're too small to make a lot of money."
The Seinfeld connection
J. Peterman was founded in 1987 as a catalog fashion and furniture company. The brand became a household name in the 1990s when "Seinfeld" featured a fictionalized version of founder John Peterman, played by actor John O'Hurley. O'Hurley became a part owner of the real company in 1999.
The company opened a Blue Ash warehouse in 2017 but ended in-person shopping there about three years later.
No response from J. Peterman, JP Outfitters, John Peterman, Tim Peterman or John O'Hurley was available in any source as of Sept. 12. No hearing date for the AG's case has been announced.
