Bret Mustain joined Sycamore High School as assistant principal for the 2026-27 school year. He brings 15 years as a math teacher, department chair, advisor and coach to the roughly 1,678-student building on Cornell Road.
Mustain, who earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Ohio State University and a master's in education from Xavier University, told the student newspaper The Leaf that building personal connections is job one.
"My first objective is to build relationships with staff and students, helping everyone improve and taking the initiative to have personal conversations," Mustain said in a profile published Monday, Oct. 19.
He described a smooth start to the school year, saying everyone has been "welcoming and accommodating." He also praised what he called Sycamore's "passion for education" and said he looks forward to deeper involvement in the community as the year goes on.
His advice to students was direct: "showing up, working hard, and being kind."
Outside of school, Mustain enjoys cycling, backpacking, cooking and spending time with family and friends, according to the school's administration page. He is assigned to the Class of 2029 and joins Principal Greg Pottebaum's leadership team.
The district announced the hire in early August, as first reported by the Loveland Symmes Chronicle. The Chronicle noted that the district's announcement did not name Mustain's previous employer.
His appointment capped a broader wave of leadership changes the Sycamore Board of Education approved at its July 8 meeting. The board named Danielle Gray as principal of Blue Ash Elementary, added two new directors of curriculum and instruction and appointed Taryn Barker as director of special education for grades 7-12. Natalie Moss was named interim assistant principal at Maple Dale Elementary.
Sycamore High School serves students from Montgomery, Blue Ash and Sycamore Township. The district enrolls about 6,051 students across seven schools.
