Montgomery residents can drop off expired or unwanted prescription medications for free, anonymous disposal Saturday, Oct. 24, at a collection event hosted by the Montgomery Police Department.
Police Chief John Crowell's department will accept tablets, capsules and all other solid dosage forms from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., according to the city's event listing. Drop-offs are free and anonymous. The collection takes place at the Safety Center, 10150 Montgomery Road, where the department is headquartered.
Intravenous solutions, syringes and items the city labels "collectables" will not be accepted.
Blue Ash Police are hosting a separate collection at the same time at the Municipal and Safety Center, 4343 Cooper Road. That event, run in partnership with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), also accepts only pills and patches. No liquids, needles or sharps. No questions asked.
The two local drop-off sites give area residents options on opposite sides of the coverage area.
Year-round disposal option
Montgomery residents who cannot make Saturday's event have another choice. The city has offered free self-locking prescription pill vials at the Safety Center since Jan. 1, according to a city announcement about the program. The vials, available while supplies last, are part of a broader safety effort that also includes free cable gun locks for residents.
That program grew out of a mental health initiative the city launched in 2022, according to the same announcement.
Overdose response
The department's drug-safety work extends beyond collection events. All Montgomery officers carry Narcan, the overdose-reversal medication, according to the department's addiction resources page. Hamilton County also operates a Heroin Task Force focused on investigating overdose cases and prosecuting dealers on state and federal charges, according to the same page.
