A Hamilton County deputy suffered a minor arm injury Monday, Oct. 5, after a window blew out at a burning barbershop on Montgomery Road in Silverton.
The deputy was on patrol around 5 a.m. when he spotted heavy flames at Razor 1 Kutz Barbershop near Plainfield Road, Deer Park Silverton Joint Fire District Chief Dennis E. Meador II told Fox 19, which first reported the fire. He stopped to check whether anyone was inside and help evacuate the building.
He was not fighting the fire when a window blew out, sending glass into his arm, Meador confirmed. Blue Ash, Madeira, Indian Hill and Deer Park-Silverton crews all responded to the scene. Montgomery Road was closed for more than an hour between Section and Plainfield roads before reopening.
A person who lives in an apartment above the barbershop was rescued from the building, according to WCPO. That resident was not injured.
The blaze was contained quickly and limited to the barbershop, Meador said. The damage inside was extensive. Shattered glass littered the floor, and scorch marks covered the walls and ceiling, WCPO reported.
Shop owner Don Hudson, who told WCPO he opened Razor 1 Kutz about 12 years ago, said fire investigators suspect an electronic open/closed sign short-circuited and started the blaze. The cause remains officially under investigation, according to Meador.
"It's like losing your home. It's basically my second home, my second life. So it's tough," Hudson told WCPO.
Hudson said he poured all his savings into opening the shop. He does not yet know what rebuilding will cost. The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office has not released the deputy's name or an official statement about the incident. The deputy is doing better, WLWT reported Wednesday, Oct. 7.
Hudson said he plans to go mobile to reach elderly clients and other regulars while the shop is closed. His goal is to reopen by the new year, he told WLWT.
